CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT SEASON!  17-1-5

2007-08 Team Roster:

Coach, Ross Meads

A passion for soccer comes naturally to coach Ross Meads.  Born in Brazil to missionary parents, he began playing soccer from the time he could walk.  After playing high school soccer for four years in Brazil, Coach Meads came to the United States and started for three years at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago.  In his third year, he earned all district honors in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA).  He then transferred to Grand Rapids Baptist College (now Cornerstone University) to finish his college career.  The team he played on that year took third place in the national NCCAA tournament. The following year Coach Meads was asked to stay on as an assistant to Grand Rapids Baptist College coach Tom Benefiel.  The team that year placed seventh in the NCCAA national tournament.

Upon receiving dual degrees from Grand Rapids Baptist College and Calvin College, Coach Meads taught and coached high schools boys’ soccer for four years.  He then spent eight years working with an international business before he returned to teaching, this time at the newly established Crossroads Charter Academy.  The 2006-07 school year marks Coach Meads’ seventh season coaching the Crossroads boys’ varsity team and eighth coaching the girls’ varsity team.

A fan of the Brazilian style (“jogo bonito” or “beautiful game”) of soccer, Coach Meads tries to instill into his players the ball control and passing style that can make soccer so much fun to watch.  The Crossroads’ soccer teams have developed very well and have league championships for the girls in 2004 and 2007 and for the guys in 2005.   Both programs are competitive in the MHSAA tournament, including an overtime loss in the district final for the girls’ program in the spring of 2005 and a district championship and a regional final for the guys’ program in the fall of 2005.

Assistant Coach, Chris Reynolds

Coach Reynolds has been employed at CCA for the past six years.  She has been the boys and girls assistant varsity soccer coach for four seasons.  Mrs. Reynolds currently teaches eighth grade at CCA.  Before that, she taught three years of fifth grade.  She also teaches step classes to teachers and runs five miles most mornings.  She has lived in many states including Arizona where her first two children were born.  Mrs. Reynolds and her husband are in the process of building their second house.  This will make 22 moves for the Reynolds'!

LATEST RESULTS

Game 2   Tie  Lakeview 2 at 2 Crossroads  Record :  1-0-1

Crossroads’ girls’ varsity soccer had a challenging match Wednesday afternoon at home against Lakeview.  Lakeview came out strong and dominated the first ten minutes of the game.  After that, the Lady Cougars settled down and controlled much of the action.  Lakeview did break through first, scoring off of an indirect kick.  Minutes later, Crossroads found itself down 2-0 when Lakeview took advantage of confusion in the penalty box to find the net.  Crossroads would start its comeback right before the half.  Rachel Thorne had a beautiful shot into the upper right hand corner of the net to cut the score to 2-1 with less than a minute left in the half.

The Lady Cougars continued to dominate in the second half.  There were numerous scoring chances that came so close to tying  the game.

It took a nice combination of passes from Tara Cassidy on the right, to Chloe Balanda on the left, and then back to Jen Lokers on the right to tie the game.  Crossroads continued to press for the game-winning goal and had great chances right up to the last five seconds of the game.  Congratulations, ladies, on a great game and an amazing comeback.

The varsity lady cougars would also like to thank the middle school soccer team and Coach Yurick for the welcome to the field.  It was awesome.

Game 1 Freemont Providence 0 at 5 Crossroads

The girls’ varsity soccer team had a great start to the 2008 season.  Fifty-seven seconds into the game Olivia Schonert scored on an assist from Tara Cassidy.  Olivia had a beautiful shot into the lower left hand corner of the net.  Before the second half finished, CCA scored again on a cross from Chloe Balanda to Jen Lokers.  Crossroads had numerous chances but weren’t able to find the net again in the first half.

In the second half, the Lady Cougars continued to dominate.  Tara Cassidy had a nice cross to Chloe Balanda who finished with a strong shot into the back of the net.  Chloe scored again on a nice pass from Jen Lokers.  Kachine Bean finished the scoring on an assist from Tara Cassidy.  Considering it was the first game played under miserable conditions, Coach Meads was very happy with the way the ladies played.  The defense was very solid and shut out the Storm with only three shots on goal.  Congratulations to all the defense and Sara Geasler and Micah Otteson on the shutout.  Nice start to the year, ladies.
