Another School Year Over? Crossroads Charter Academy’s official last day of school for 2009-2010 was June 10th. However, in this day and age the question is, “Are school years over on the last day of normal classes?” Technology has brought us so many ways to earn high school credits, take assessments, enrich your knowledge in any given subject, master new techniques, or just learn for fun, many times in the comforts of your own home! In addition, local libraries, schools, and other institutions offer fantastic reading and learning opportunities for kids. Do not forget recreational learning opportunities. When students learn how to swim, play a sport, or improve their skills at a hobby, they are still stimulating the brain and learning. There are summer school opportunities for many kids, especially Title I students. I encourage families to have their sons and daughters participate in as many summer activities as possible and continue to learn year round. This has been a great school year for Crossroads Charter Academy. Our students and staff worked hard and the results showed in solid test scores and an EdYes grade of “A”. CCA’s elementary school followed a new daily schedule that allowed music, physical education, and art classes to flourish. It really was enjoyable to watch students shoot archery, learn tennis from FSU students, perform musicals, display art work, etc. We were saddened by the loss of our 7-12 Principal Tom Saporito, but Ross Meads performed admirably as an interim and the end of year events were all great! Our students, parents, and staff handled the situation wonderfully. Laura Vallette joined the CCA Board of Directors in April. It is exciting that Laura is the first CCA graduate to serve on the Board. It was also a successful year for co-curricular events at CCA. Our sports teams competed well and represented themselves and the school in a positive manner. Many students had fun participating in Destination Imagination, science fairs, field trips, and many other activities. Our K-6 All-Star Academy has been a rousing success. Our 7-12 grade building is completing its first year as a Title I School. This program really provided many students with additional academic interventions and opportunities. We started the Schools of Excellence process with the Michigan Department of Education and GVSU and are in the initial stages of North Central Association accreditation. It is impossible to share everything that happened at CCA, but it has been a great year. To the students, families, and staff, we say a loud “Thank-you and job well done!” Enjoy the summer!
